Why do Leaves change colors in the Fall ?

Leaves contain pigments called chlorophyll that give them their characteristic green color and are essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants produce food. As leaves mature, the chlorophyll breaks down and is not replaced, causing the green color to fade and the yellow pigments, called xanthophylls, to become more visible.

This process is part of the natural aging of the leaf and is usually a sign that the leaf is nearing the end of its life cycle. The yellow coloration can also be caused by other factors such as nutrient deficiencies, disease, or environmental stress.

Once the chlorophyll breaks down, the plant can no longer produce food through photosynthesis, and the yellowing leaves eventually fall off the plant. This helps the plant to conserve its resources and prepare for the next growth cycle.
